As part of a database cleanup we did for Synup, I was able to gather a very large list of citation sources and test them to see the kind of verification technique they used.
It was interesting that over 21 sites allowed anyone to claim any listing after just verifying via email, while 61 sites didn’t even allow users to claim listings.
In general, there were three main verification methods used:
Method #1 – Postcard (3 sites)
To claim a listing, you needed to wait for a postcard to arrive at the business address and enter the pin as referenced within the postcard.
List of sites that support postcard verification:
- Google (also supports phone verification in some cases)
- Bing (also supports phone verification in some cases)
Method #2 – Phone(9 sites)
Pretty self explanatory from the title. You’ll need to wait for a phone call to verify a listing
Method #3 – Email (21 sites)
This is by far the simplest method, you’ll just need to verify a listing via email.
